Wiltshire County Council - Terence Herbert

"Fewer cases, better outcomes", find out how we are enabling our social workers to spend more time with children and their families from our associate director for operational children's services Terence Herbert

I've held the position of associate director in Wiltshire since November 2013.

I came into this role after a period of improvement following an 'inadequate' rating by Ofsted inspectors in 2012 - within just 16 months we had improved the services enough to achieve an 'adequate' rating. My challenge now is to ensure we continue on this improvement journey.

We give our social workers the tools, the space and the environment to focus on enhancing the lives of children and families; with a promise that each social worker will have a caseload of no more than 18 children this means that we have a service which is really focused on outcomes

Our aim is to become 'outstanding'. So I am looking for people with a 'can-do' attitude, people who represent all the communities we work with and people who share our passion for improving young lives.

care operations from our acting associate director
Carolyn Hamblett

I am currently the acting associate director and have worked for Wiltshire Council since 2002.

We are very forward thinking in how we deliver our adult social care services. We already have developed an outcome based approach to social care through our Help to Live at Home Service, and are an exemplar of best practice (one of only five local authority areas chosen by the Government) for our Better Care Plan, which will help to develop integrated health and social care for the people of Wiltshire.

Our team structures provide staff with variety and the opportunity to work across and within many teams and specialist areas, and for this reason I am very committed to staff development. To support this we have a really good teamworking ethos which provides excellent support for staff and managers.
